Madonna and Guy Ritchie will reportedly seek a divorce in the next few days, ending almost eight years of marriage.
Pair have finally decided to make the split public, say reports
Sources says a statement confirming the split has been prepared and is to be released imminently.
It follows a series of rows between Madonna and Ritchie. They now only talk through their personal assistants, the source said.
Ritchie has reportedly broken off from filming in France to fly back to the UK to inform his parents of the split.
His mother Lady Amber Leighton told reporters at her west London home she would not comment on the matter: "We are not talking to Press and we won't be all day."
He will now move out of the couple's London home to the Wiltshire mansion owned by the pair.
Sun Showbiz Editor On Madonna And Guy
The Sun's showbiz editor Gordon Smart told Sky News: "Madonna and Guy have been spending months trying to make the marriage work.
"I think they have reached the point now where there's no way they can repair the damage that's been done.
"I think the last few weeks in particular, they have had so many arguments it's just come to the stage where they have decided to finish with the pretence."
The superstar and the British film director were rumoured to be on the verge of splitting in June this year, but the reports were denied.
Sources said they would announce their separation in November when Madonna's world tour is due to finish. That date has now apparently been brought forward because the singer is said to want to finalise the divorce before Christmas.
Madonna, 50, is said to have been in talks with Fiona Shackleton, the lawyer who handled Sir Paul McCartney's high-profile split from Heather Mills this year.
Sky's entertainment correspondent Matt Smith said: "One thing we know is they are private people.
"Their wedding was very private - it wasn't spilt over Hello! or OK! magazine as other couples do. They will be keen to keep this out of the courts.
"I think they are sensible people and will have watched what happened with Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills in the High Court - how the money was exposed and how all the dirty laundry was aired in public."
Legal experts have speculated that Ritchie - whose films include Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, RocknRolla and Swept Away - could walk away with up to £50m.
The couple are not thought to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement when they married in 2000. Madonna's wealth is estimated at about £300m.
The pair have spent most of their married life in London and Wiltshire with children Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight, and David, three, who was adopted from an orphanage in Malawi.
