A wave of bitterly cold weather has left much of the country blanketed in a covering of snow and ice - and the deep freeze is set to go on.
Temperatures plummeted overnight and severe weather warnings have been issued from the Scottish Highlands down to the South East.
As millions of people head back to work following the Christmas break, the cold snap delayed the return to school for many children.
Sky News weather presenter Isobel Lang said: "Beware if you are travelling this morning as it'll turn very icy in places as a band of rain, sleet and snow clears away to the south."
The cold snap brought a thin, but picturesque, layer of fluffy white flakes to the capital and surrounding areas.
And for those hoping for a respite to the cold, it will be some time before relief arrives - the wintry weather is expected to last right into next week.
"After another severe frost on Monday night, Tuesday will be a freezing cold but sunny day," Lang added.
In Gloucestershire 15 schools closed due to the weather with heavy snow in Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean.
One gritter lorry overturned in the forest as problems were reported on more than a dozen routes.
The decision was taken to close the schools due to heating and access problems, the county council said
